CREATING 500 GREEN JOBS FOR KANUNGU YOUTH THROUGH CHILLI FARMING (CGJF)

The Y4BF Program

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uganda and Stanbic Uganda Holdings Limited (SUHL) have developed the Youth4Business Innovation and Entrepreneurship Facility (Y4BF) – an innovative instrument designed to spur impact-driven entrepreneurship, foster innovation, and leverage business solutions to address the youth unemployment challenge.

The Y4BF is curated to enable youth and businesses pilot innovative enterprise ideas (solutions, technologies, business models), or new ways and markets of delivering products and services with a commercial imperative, as well as transform successful innovative pilots with commercial viability into impact at scale.

Special fOCUS

The facility also seeks to provide a flexible funding mechanism that will stimulate faster recovery of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that have borne the brunt of the impact of COVID-19, of which Tree Uganda Academy (TUA) is one of them.

Y4BF

Project Objectives and Expected Outputs

The project is designed to deliver wholesome solutions supporting TUA to obtain the proper certification and licensing required in order to begin accessing and selling their farmers' Chillies directly into high-value export markets. At the same time, the project will promote greater inclusivity within the value chain, encouraging young female and youth led production by educating on gender mainstreaming and creating new enterprise opportunities.

Y4BF

Program Benefits

Mobilize and Capacity build 500 youth in Kanungu to engage in Chilli Production Value Chain and to pilot new ways and markets of delivering Chilli products and associated services with a commercial imperative.

Conservation Value

Potential for Replication

Chilli has been identified as a deterrent to most crop raiding animals and if planted along/around the gardens by those neighboring Queen Elizabeth National Park (QENP), will help stop wildlife invasion to other crops and help minimize the importunate Human-Wildlife Conflict whilst contributing to income generation. Chilli Business has immense potential to complement the country’s efforts to deliver on the promise of the 2030 Development Agenda and most of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially SDGs 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13 & 15.
Unlike many other food crops, Chillies are much less palatable and have been used to create buffers along the edges of some National parks like Murchison Falls to stop Human-Wildlife Conflict. Drawing from this example, the financing of this project with a view of massive youth engagement to increase production and adding value on the primary product will be highly justified both in Environmental and Economic terms, with attraction of a wider market both local and international.
Besides, with economic and environmental point of view, the project is highly viable to offer more employment opportunities to the youth, mitigate the effects of climate change with greener scenery, as well as end the existing Human-Wildlife conflict along Queen Elizabeth National Park, Elephants being the most endangered species.

Economic Value

This project is funded to spark the commercial production and marketing of other fresh fruits and vegetables such as Egg Plant White, Pineapples, Avocado, Mangoes, e.t.c which are also demanded on the world market. This will further youth entrepreneurship, jobs creation, production, and consequently improved household income and poverty alleviation

Digital Technology

Chilli Farming can easily be adopted by more young farmers since it requires less expertise, minimum starting capital, and can just be grown anywhere with minimal risks involved. This will further youth employment with increased productivity, whilst maximizing the associated economic and environmental benefits

This program is an opportunity to scale up our agricultural based digital platforms (Awega Apps) and address the technology gap in order to embrace full potential embodied in the rapidly changing new technologies to improve quality, reduce costs, and help close the infrastructure financing gap

Wealth Creation

This program once funded will spark the commercial production and marketing of other fresh fruits and vegetables such as Egg Plant White, Pineapples, Avocado, Mangoes, e.t.c which are also demanded on the world market. This will further youth entrepreneurship, jobs creation, production, and consequently improved household income and poverty alleviation.

Enhanced Eco-Tourism

This Program has potential to attract a wide range of visitors, as well as provide new insights to the tourists who come to see the chilli farms and enjoy accompanying services with high level of hospitality, whilst appreciating nature  cultural features, both past and present and provide foreign exchange revenues.

Land Consolidation

In order to increase the number of young people engaged in production and conservation, Tree Uganda Academy (TUA) has in its precedent efforts designed and accomplished several Training Programs on “Access to Land” and Sustainable Land Use to most Youth and their Parents in Kanungu with support from Farm Africa, through Kanungu Young Farmers Association. These training Programs have played a pivotal role in bridging the Land gap between the parents and their children through Land Use Agreements
